Is Tim Cook refusal to give in to the FBI just bullshit? Surely the Feds/NSA/CIA can do all that anyway? I always assumed that to get licencing for new hardware/software, companies had to supply law enforcement and security services with back-door keys to these products.

Is Tim Cook refusal to give in to the FBI just PR bullshit to say “Apple is still cool, man”? Surely the Feds/NSA/CIA can hack into all our phones anyway? I always assumed that to get licencing for new hardware/software, US companies had to supply law enforcement and security services with back-door keys to these products.

Seems like it was indeed all just posturing by Tim Cook, allowing him to save face and declare Apple still cool and anti-establishment.

I know it’s a Time Magazine article, but these kinds of things are often interesting for the things they don’t say.

It would make sense that it was a marketing ploy. Edward Snowden was pretty sure that the FBI could unlock the phones anyway.
